Position Description

Texas A&M University’s Department of Landscape Architecture & Urban Planning, in the College of Architecture, invites applications for a full-time tenured/tenure track faculty member for a nine-month academic appointment beginning August 2022. The successful candidate will be expected to teach four classes per year (2/2), primarily in the department’s Master of Land & Property Development (MLPD) program, as well as conduct original research and contribute to the service requirements of the department, college, university, and community. Applicants will be considered for the titles of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor depending on qualifications. We are particularly interested in candidates who can teach in the following areas: finance, real estate development, market analysis, marketing, due diligence, site development, entrepreneurial enterprise, sustainable development and/or project management. Candidates with professional experience in real estate or real estate development will be highly valued.

The Land & Property Development Program, created in 1984, is one of the oldest programs in the United States offering a Master’s degree in real estate development. Unlike many traditional real estate development programs focused solely on finance modeling, the MLPD program incorporates an inter-disciplinary approach that exposes students to real estate development from idea conceptualization to monetizing assets upon stabilization. The Program covers all aspects of development, with project-based courses in financial analysis, market analysis, due diligence, site analysis, project management, construction management, residential and commercial development, and sustainable development. Students typically complete their 36-hours of coursework in three semesters, and benefit from class sizes from 15 to 30 students.

The Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning is one of the few in the country that is home to three disciplines— land and property development, urban planning, and landscape architecture—all of which are critical in the creation and delivery of healthy, efficient, resilient, equitable, and accessible places. This combination of disciplines offers unparalleled opportunities for interdisciplinary research and teaching. The Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning includes 38 full-time faculty members (22 of whom are tenured or tenure-track) and offers the following six degrees: the Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning, the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (accredited), the Master in Land & Property Development, the Master of Landscape Architecture (accredited), the Master in Urban Planning (accredited), and the Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Science. We also offer a number of articulated and dual degrees. The department has strong ties to the worldrenowned Hazard Reduction & Recovery Center, the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, the Center for Health Systems & Design, the Center for Housing and Urban Development, Texas Target Communities (a highly-regarded outreach program), Texas Sea Grant, Texas A&M Real Estate Center, and other centers and certificate programs in related fields within the College of Architecture. The College of Architecture at Texas A&M University is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. Over 130 faculty members in the departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture & Urban Planning (LAUP), Construction Science, and Visualization serve just under 4,000 students in 16 degree programs. These cover the entire spectrum of disciplines having to do with the built environment. Although nearly 300,000 in population, Bryan/College Station maintains its small-town feel, offering a high quality of life with a low cost of living. The Bryan/College Station area is in the center of the Texas Urban Triangle—home to more than 13 million people in four metropolitan areas (all within easy driving distance)-Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio. The challenges currently facing Texas related to climate change, natural hazards, transportation, demographic composition, and economic change foreshadow the changes that the rest of the nation will experience over the next 30 years, making it a perfect laboratory for testing hypotheses related to urban and land development and management.

Qualifications

At a minimum, the successful candidate must have a terminal degree related to real estate development or finance with a real estate concentration. Candidates without a doctorate will be expected to have professional experience as well as evidence of original scholarly activity. For candidates that expect to be appointed at the Associate Professor or Professor levels, demonstrated evidence of strong teaching and research is required. The candidate should be qualified to teach core and elective courses in the MLPD curriculum. The candidate will also contribute to the service requirements of the college, university, and community.
