2020 AREUEA-ASSA Conference

AREUEA’s January Meeting is held in conjunction with the meetings of the Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA). The ASSA conference is held in conjunction with approximately 55 associations in related disciplines over a three-day period. Average full attendance for the conference is over 13,000 attendees.

AREUEA organizes twenty-three sessions during the three-day conference, in which selected participants report on research in progress or recently completed. The topical focus of the conference sessions will include theoretical, empirical, and policy research in real estate economics, real estate finance, and urban economics. Additionally, AREUEA hosts a Doctoral Session which invited distinguished scholars share their insights and wisdom with students on topics such as career planning, publishing, and research. Furthermore selected students can present their current research at the doctoral poster session which is held in conjunction of a reception in their honor.

Each year AREUEA hosts a joint session with the American Economic Association (AEA) and a joint session with the American Finance Association (AFA) in which topics of mutual interests are presented by distinguished scholars from both organizations. The Presidential Luncheon is featured on the last full day of the conference and is hosted in honor of AREUEA’s outgoing President. In addition to the Presidential address, AREUEA recognizes the generous sponsors of the organization and announces the recipients of the George Bloom Award, Edwin Mills Best Paper Award, Real Estate Economics Best Referee Awards, and the Homer Hoyt Institute Dissertation Award.

General Conference Information

The 55th AREUEA-ASSA Conference will be held in San Diego, California January 3-5, 2020. Please note that the conference for 2020 will be a Friday, Saturday, Sunday conference with the AREUEA Board Meeting Thursday, January 2, 2020.

Information on the 2020 conference is posted as it becomes available. Conference registration information will be posted around mid-September, once it is available from the ASSA.

Register for the 2020 San Diego Conference

Registration for the 2020 AREUEA-ASSA Conference in San Diego, CA will open on Tuesday, September 19 at 10:00 am CT / 11:00 am ET. Please visit the ASSA Conference website for updated and additional registration information.

For information regarding registration fees and deadlines, please visit the ASSA Conference website. Additional fees for the AREUEA Presidential Luncheon are per person.

You are required to register for the conference before you will be allowed to make a hotel reservation. We strongly encourage you to register for the conference as soon as registration opens so that you can then complete your hotel reservation. Space in the AREUEA conference hotel is limited.

Please Note: All communication regarding registration should be directed to ASSA and all hotel information should be directed to the booking agent.

All AREUEA special events and sessions will be taking place in the Manchester Grand Hyatt, 1 Market Place, San Diego, California, United States, 92101 (Phone: +1 619 232 1234).

All conference attendees must have an official ASSA name badge in order to attend the paper sessions and special events. (All session chairs, paper presenters and discussants must be registered.)

Hotel Reservation Info

All AREUEA paper sessions, special events such as the Presidential Luncheon and evening receptions for the upcoming January conference will be held in the Manchester Grand Hyatt. The hotel is located at 1 Market Place, San Diego, California, United States, 92101 (Phone: +1 619 232 1234). Rooms are limited and the conference hotel will fill-up quickly so we encourage you to register for the conference and make your hotel reservation as soon as possible.

ASSA requires that you register for the conference prior to making your hotel reservation. You will receive a confirmation number during registration, which you will need to complete your hotel reservation. Please visit the ASSA Conference website for registration and hotel information.

Please note, all hotel reservation and/or questions regarding your reservation should be directed to the booking agent. AREUEA does not have access to hotel reservation information and therefore is unable to assist you with your hotel reservation.

Airport/Hotel Transportation

There are a number of options available to get to the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel from the San Diego Airport.

San Diego International Airport is 2.9 miles from hotel.

Taxis: Many companies provide taxicab service at San Diego International Airport. If you need a taxi, simply follow the signs leading to the Transportation Plazas. A Customer Service Representative will place you with the first available taxi, unless you specify a particular taxicab company.

The guide below lists taxicab radio/dispatch services in San Diego. Call directly or use the Web links to find the taxicab service that best suits your needs. Please refer to a San Diego phone book yellow pages for a complete list of taxicab services. Please visit the San Diego International Airport website for further information.

Session Schedule

The date, time, and room assignments are set by ASSA for the upcoming January Conference. If you are scheduled to present a paper at the conference we ask that you submit your final paper (should you have any changes to your original paper submission) to the AREUEA office, via email, no later than December 1, 2019. All conference papers will be linked to the program by December 15 and made available for download for discussants, session chairs, and participants.

All presenters, chairs and discussants must be registered for the conference.

Please note that ASSA will be providing LCD projectors in the session rooms. Computers WILL NOT be provided. If you plan on using the LCD projector you must provide your own laptop.

The 2020 conference committee has organized joint sessions with the American Economic Association (AEA) and the American Finance Association (AFA).

Homer Hoyt Institute Dissertation Award

The American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association solicits submissions for their doctoral dissertation award competition.

This award is sponsored by the Homer Hoyt Institute and distributed by AREUEA.

Doctoral Session & Reception

AREUEA will be hosting the 33rd annual Doctoral Session and Reception on Thursday, January 2, 2020 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, San Diego, CA, hotel and room location to be announced.

Please use the link below to apply for the upcoming Doctoral Session. NOTE: You will receive an automated confirmation email of your submission application. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please follow up with the AREUEA office as your application may not be complete.

Doctoral students who applied and are accepted to present during the poster session will be displaying their research during the doctoral reception. AREUEA members, please plan on attending this event to support all of student awardees. We also encourage all Ph.D. students to attend this insightful event.
