Background

This appointment forms part of an ambitious plan to further develop the research and teaching

capacity in the Department of Planning and Environmental Management in the School of

Environment, Education and Development. The post is particularly intended to strengthen the

research capacity of the School in Real Estate. We are looking to appoint an outstanding

candidate to provide leadership in our research in Real Estate as part of our exciting growth

plans as we expand our research and teaching in real estate and urban development. This

position, together other recent posts in real estate including a Lecturer and a Presidential Fellow,

will add to our current real estate staffing, bringing the total to seven. We see this as an

important strategic post that will provide enhanced research development and leadership in the

field of real estate in an international context. Although outstanding candidates from any field of

real estate are encouraged to apply, we are particularly keen to hear from those who can

strengthen our research excellence and capacity in areas such as real estate finance and

investment, real estate economics, global real estate markets and sustainable real estate.

Planning and Environmental Management at the University of Manchester has an international

reputation for high quality research and teaching. Our research scored highly in the 2008

Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The Planning and Environmental Management Department is part of the wider School of

Environment, Education and Development (SEED) which also includes the Global Development

Institute (GDI), Manchester Institute of Education (MIE) and the Department of Geography as

well as part of the joint Manchester School of Architecture (MSA).

The Department of Planning and Environmental Management has grown in the last few years to

over 20 permanent full-time academic staff covering the disciplines of real estate, urban

planning and development, international planning, urban design and environmental

management.

We already have RICS and RTPI accreditation on several of our programmes.

This appointment is primarily intended to strengthen our research capacity and leadership in

Real Estate as well as contribute to our current real estate programmes at undergraduate and

Masters levels.

The University of Manchester is a member of the Russell Group of UK research intensive

universities and is placed consistently highly in both national and international surveys of

university education, ranking 44th in the world and 6th nationally according to the Shanghai

Ranking of World Universities in 2018/19 and the highest in Europe (and equal 3rd in the world)

in the inaugural (2019) Times Higher Education University Impact Ratings.

Research in Planning and Environmental Management

Planning and Environmental Management brings a multi-disciplinary approach to spatial

planning, environmental management, real estate and urban design with numerous

connections across discipline boundaries with the natural sciences, social sciences and arts.

Strong and growing links exist with the Manchester Architecture Research Centre (MARC): we

made a joint planning and architecture submission to the RAE 2008 and REF 2014.

The Department of Planning and Environmental Management has internationally-recognised

strengths in environmental assessment and management, urban and regional planning, urban

regeneration and development, real estate and urban design. In formal terms our research is

currently based around three themes:

o Analysis of spatial governance, policy and planning, addressing such issues as planning

systems and practice, urban policy evaluation, urban regeneration and development, real

estate markets and development, housing, brownfield land re-use, and regional and

metropolitan planning;

o Sustainability, resilience, nature and built environments, covering topics related to

climate change, environmental assessment, urban ecology, ecosystems, regional

sustainability issues and environmental planning and management; and

o International theories and practices of architecture and design, linking with colleagues in

Architecture, embracing issues relating to urban design, sustainable property, new

urbanism, ecological design and sustainable cities.

Much of our research is conducted through research centres, The Manchester Urban Institute

(MUI) combines the strengths of the Spatial Policy and Analysis Laboratory (previously the long

established Centre for Urban Policy Studies) and other groupings. The mission of MUI is to

serve as a leading academic urban institute that generates world-class research, achieves high

levels of engagement and impact with non-academic stakeholders and trains the next

generation of urban activists, decision-makers, researchers and scholars. By bringing together

work from across the arts and humanities, the social sciences, business and health we are

committed to an increased understanding of the global urban condition - past, present and future

- and to studying and changing the world through engaging with a range of global, national and

local stakeholders. MUI staff also work closely with other University of Manchester Institutes,

including the Global Development Institute and the Manchester Environment Research Institute.

We have succeeded in attracting research funding from a wide variety of sources, with recent

funders including the EU, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, ESRC, EPSRC, AHRC, RTPI, RICS

and government departments such as CLG and BIS. This high and sustained level of research

activity has allowed us to build a highly supportive environment for staff to pursue world class

research in the areas of planning and environmental management, with a team of over 20

academic staff, 10 research associates, circa 35 doctoral students, and a number of visiting and

honorary researchers.

The high quality of our research was evident in the results of the 2014 Research Assessment

Exercise (REF), which indicated that 75% of Planning and Architecture research was deemed

either ‘world-leading’ (4* = 31%) or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* = 44%). Research leadership is

strongly interdisciplinary, with direction provided by the SEED research committee. At discipline

level, Planning and Architecture work closely together on research direction, for instance with

shared annual research reviews, staff mentoring, PHD supervision and postgraduate workshops.

Postgraduate Research Students

Planning and Environmental Management has a thriving and lively community of around 35

research students. The majority of our students are funded by prestigious research council

awards and other scholarships. We are at the forefront of providing quality training and

supervision to research students, through the recently established North West Doctoral Training

Centre (involving the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster). Studentship awards

are available from the ESRC and other research funding councils, and from the University. We

are also strongly involved in Manchester’s Power Networks Doctoral Training College.

Teaching and Learning in Planning and Environmental Management

Planning and Environmental Management retains the longstanding practice-oriented ethos of its

teaching programmes, married to a thriving research culture that draws on synergies with

partner disciplines in the School of Environment and Development. We have recently

restructured our undergraduate and masters programmes, to strengthen their content and

individual identities, including significantly expanded provision in the areas of real estate and

urban design.

We are fully committed to excellence in teaching and learning. The curriculum is characterised

by progressive skills acquisition, choice, reflective learning and a diversity of learning

opportunities with significant amounts of fieldwork and group work. The School seeks to

facilitate curriculum innovation and development and to encourage continual enhancement of

The School of Environment, Education and Development and Development

The School of Environment, Education and Development (SEED) represents one of the most

innovative academic structures of The University of Manchester. It forges an interdisciplinary

partnership combining Geography, Planning and Environmental Management, the Manchester

School of Architecture (MSA), the Manchester Institute of Education (MIE) and the Global

Development Institute (GDI), thus uniting research into social and environmental dimensions of

human activity. The School has nearly 200 academic and research staff (within a total staff

complement of 270); over 1,000 undergraduate and 1,750 postgraduate students, of whom

around 330 are research students.

Faculty of Humanities

With the creation of the new University of Manchester in 2004 (following the merger with

UMIST), a Faculty of Humanities was formed encompassing academic areas as diverse as Arts,

Education, Law, Development, Social Sciences, Business and Management, and Information

Technology. With a total income over £100m per annum, over 18,000 students and some 1000

academic staff, the Faculty is equivalent to a medium-sized university in the UK. The School

also has strong links with the School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, with

cooperation on both research and teaching fronts, and there are also strong working

connections with Engineering and Life Sciences.

REF 2014 results showed an outstanding performance by The University of Manchester,

The University

Manchester offers extensive provision for research. Library facilities include the John Rylands

University Library and the Manchester Central Reference Library. The John Rylands library is

the largest non-legal-deposit academic library in the United Kingdom, providing services and

resources to students, researchers and academic staff as well as members of the public,

schools and commercial companies. It holds the widest range of electronic resources of any UK

The City and the Region

Manchester is one of the great European cities and the University’s main campus is within

walking distance of the city centre. The city’s architecture represents one of the high points of

Victorian achievement. The modern city is a major centre of banking, commerce and technology

and manufacturing, and hosts MediaCity UK, the country’s most significant centre for creative

and digital businesses. Manchester has a highly cosmopolitan atmosphere and its cultural life is

internationally renowned. Within a fifteen minute walk of the campus there are three outstanding

professional theatre companies, the halls of the Hallé and BBC Philharmonic orchestras, the

HOME arts centre and other cinemas, and Europe’s fastest-growing Chinatown. Amongst

developments enriching the area’s cultural life have been: the opening of the Lowry Centre at

Salford Quays; the Bridgewater Concert Hall; Urbis in the centre of Manchester and the Imperial

War Museum North, designed by Daniel Libeskind, in Trafford; and also the refurbishment of the

City Art Gallery.

Trafford, specifically Old Trafford, is known internationally for sport: it is a venue for Test cricket

and the home of Manchester United FC. The Commonwealth Games were held in Manchester in

2002 and were highly acclaimed. There is an abundance of new sports facilities; the University is

a stakeholder in the Commonwealth Pool – now known as the Manchester Aquatics Centre –

which offers on campus, world-class swimming facilities. The Commonwealth Stadium became

the home of Manchester City FC in 2003. Housing is varied, plentiful and, by English standards,

moderately priced. Schooling ranges from world-renowned private schools (such as Manchester

Grammar School and Withington Girls’ School) to excellent sixth-form colleges and

comprehensives.

Manchester is well served by a major international airport, with direct scheduled flights to many

destinations in Europe as well as North America and Asia. Manchester Piccadilly railway station

has been refurbished and is served by inter-city and other train services – with a direct link to

Manchester Airport. The expanding network of Metrolink tram services offers an alternative

mode of public transport from certain parts of the conurbation. Some of the most beautiful

countryside in Europe is just over a thirty minute drive from the University, in the Peak District

National Park, while the Lake District and Snowdonia are also within easy reach.

Job Description

The successful candidate will:

 Be a leading researcher and scholar in the Real Estate field

 Ensure the recruitment and retention of high quality PGR students

 Contribute to our teaching programmes in Real Estate, including programme and curriculum

review and development to ensure our teaching continues to be innovative and of high

quality

 Help ensure our student experience is comparable to the best in the UK and beyond

 Undertake knowledge exchange work with the worlds of policy and professional practice,

taking our research and scholarship out into the wider communities we serve

 Demonstrate academic leadership and an ability to think strategically

 Take an appropriate share of administrative and pastoral duties

 Act in a collegial and supportive manner

Person Specification

Essential:

 A PhD, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline

 A record of successful academic leadership and a commitment to being a team-player and

team-builder

 A strong record of research achievement, publication and external grant success in Real

Estate

 A demonstrable plan for high-quality research in the immediate future and the longer term

that complements or extends our existing research agenda in Real Estate and SEED

 Demonstrable experience of delivering and promoting the highest quality of student

experience

 Evidence of high quality teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in

real estate

 Success in recruiting doctoral students and supervising them to completion

 A commitment to collegiality and an ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary academic

team

 Excellent communication skills and an ability to represent the Department of Planning and

Environmental Management and the University externally to peer groups and external

organisations, including relevant professional bodies

• Membership or eligibility for membership of a relevant professional body such as the Royal

Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) or other relevant professional institution
